Part 3: Wire and Power WiFi 7 and 5G in Your Building – the Hybrid Solution

Next generation wireless networks are soon entering your smart building. Wi-Fi 7 and 5G will multiply the transmission rates for data and video. But how to wire and power the new access points?

In this video, we will show a hybrid solution. It lets you wire the high-speed access points in a future-proof way. And it is supplied by R&M, the infrastructure solution provider for smart building networks.

First, it’s important to realize that a traditional LAN is reaching its limits when it comes to next generation wireless networks. The installed cabling and connectivity might become partly obsolete sooner or later. Even an advanced Cat. 6A network is not expected to be sufficient to support any required transfer rate for Wi-Fi 7 and 5G antennas.

✅ Best Practice Solution
After discussing pros and cons of current high-end solutions, the video highlights the benefits of a hybrid approach. This is about a future-proof and maintenance-friendly best-practice solution. It is based on the Digital Ceiling concept, which implies a structured and zoned ceiling cabling and 90-meter link lengths. The prerequisite is that the modern antenna devices already have a fiber optic interface.

A hybrid installation as permanent link–comprising fiber optic and copper cables–connects floor distributors and service outlets in the ceiling.
The access points then get patched to the service outlets: fiber optic patch cords with LC-Duplex connectivity for data transmission, copper patch cords with RJ45 connectivity for powering the devices–PoE-like.

As an alternative and for specific Wi-Fi applications, R&M provides an extended solution. R&M has developed a dedicated hybrid cable for that purpose. It has two single-mode optical fibers and two copper wires to supply the access points. The cable supports permanent links up to 200 meters long.
